With the release of the new 2021-W Proof American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coins, the first-ever overhaul of the coins has been completed. The series now features a new bald eagle design on the reverse as created in 2020 by Jennie Norris, a member of the United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1/4 oz Gold Type 2 Coins is a depiction of Liberty from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Created in 1907, the design captures Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks forward holding up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Sun rays frame her body from behind as a ring of 50 stars encircles the design field. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2021, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2021-W Proof American Eagle Gold Type 2 Coin comes with an all-new design. In this image, the bald eagle head is shown in left-profile relief with beautiful levels of detail in the plumage of the bird, as well as accurate details in its hooked beak and the piercing gaze of the creature. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 10 DOLLARS.

History

Jennie Norris submitted her design alongside more than 30 other designs for consideration as the new reverse image for the series. Ms. Norris is a graphic designer and professor at the University of Arizona.
