Created by a mysterious founder named Hassan-i-Sabbah, the “Old Man of the Mountain” who founded their original retreat at the fortress of Alamut, this breakaway Nizari sect of Ismaili Muslims carried on the battle of an heir to the Caliphate who in their eyes had been murdered by a rival. Though they had no army, they fought on with the resources available: guile, resourcefulness, and ruthlessness, building the most impressive spy network in the Middle East of their day. Obverse

Reverse

The reverse side features a detailed miniature statue of an Assassin masked and wielding a dagger. He is surrounded by geometric decorative patterns, with decorative towers and minarets mimicking the walls of a fortress at the coin’s rim.

History

From the early days of Islam, Caliphs functioned as the successors of the Prophet, stewards of his message, and commanders of the faithful. They were both spiritual leaders and monarchs, and succession struggles among them more than once led to fresh schisms in the religion. One of the most vividly-remembered such events was the death of an heir to the Caliphate named Nizar ibn al-Mustansir in 1095 AD, a death that led to the rise of a sect of his followers who pursued their goals through espionage and murder for centuries. The Order of Assassins was best-known for its dagger-wielding hit men called the fida’i,who claimed hundreds of lives during the sect’s brief time.
