History

The Matterhorn is perhaps most famous for a contest to reach its summit that took place in July of 1865. That contest was won by Edward Whymper, whose party of six narrowly out-competed a group of Italian climbers to become the first to conquer the mountain, but at the tragic cost of four lives. The dangerous slopes of the Matterhorn have since claimed the lives of over 500 climbers, but this has never diminished its allure for alpine adventurers drawn to this ultimate mountaineering challenge on the border of the Swiss and Italian Alps.
