The Matterhorn is one of the world’s most famous alpine landmarks. Almost fifteen thousand feet high at its peak, its sheer faces have proven to be an irresistible draw for explorers and adventurers for countless decades, and it has become legendary as one of the most dangerous challenges for would-be climbers. Its iconic pyramid-shaped summit graces the beautiful commemorative 2022 Cook Islands Matterhorn 1/2 Gram Gold Coin, now on offer from Provident Metals.
The Cook Islands, a dependency of the Realm of New Zealand, is well known for the extremely diverse variety of themes celebrated on its commemorative coins. The 2022 Cook Islands Matterhorn Gold Coin is available to you in brilliant proof quality whose beauty will make it a sought-after item for collectors, and ships from Provident Metals in its own protective plastic capsule packaging, fully insured against the remote possibility of loss or damage.
The Matterhorn is perhaps most famous for a contest to reach its summit that took place in July of 1865. That contest was won by Edward Whymper, whose party of six narrowly out-competed a group of Italian climbers to become the first to conquer the mountain, but at the tragic cost of four lives. The dangerous slopes of the Matterhorn have since claimed the lives of over 500 climbers, but this has never diminished its allure for alpine adventurers drawn to this ultimate mountaineering challenge on the border of the Swiss and Italian Alps.
The pyramidic peak of the Matterhorn appears in all its majestic glory on the coin’s obverse side. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “MATTERHORN,” “4,478 m” indicating the height of its summit, and the stylized depiction of an ice ax.
First designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, the profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the coin’s reverse side is similar to that seen on many circulation coins in the British Commonwealth. It also bears the inscription “Queen Elizabeth II,” “5 Dollars,” “Cook Islands” and “2022.”
