Obverse

Despite its singular shape, this coin is legal tender of the Cook Islands, verified by an official effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on its obverse side. This is framed within geometric designs showing fluted Greek pillars below, and accompanied by the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands,” and “20 Dollars.”

Reverse

The coin’s reverse side is a majestic miniature sculpture of Zeus on his throne, with a scepter in one hand and three thunderbolts in the other. He is draped in naturalistically folded robes and his throne is accentuated by fine decorative details.

History

Although this coin is not a direct replica of any one artwork, it is directly inspired by the legendary monument to Zeus at Olympia designed by the Greek sculptor Phidias. That statue made such an impression on all who saw it that accounts of it would survive in second-hand depictions and descriptions even after the original monument was destroyed in the 5th century AD. This entry in the Spiritual Art series draws on that tradition and provides a fresh take on its details and themes.
