Obverse
On the obverse of 2022 Sovereign Gold Coins from the Royal Mint, the fifth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is shown in right-profile relief. This bust of the Queen was created in 2015 by Jody Clark, then the youngest artist from the Royal Mint to ever create a monarchs portrait. The design field shows the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions on this field read DEI GRA REGINA FID DEF and ELIZABETH II.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2022 Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin features a depiction of the Royal Arms of England. This elegant rendition of the shield of the United Kingdom supported by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland. The Royal Mint offers this design on the reverse in 2022 to celebrate the Queen’s 70th anniversary as monarch of England. She is the first monarch ever to reach a Platinum Jubilee.
History
The reverse design on the Great Britain Sovereign Gold Coin has been in place, more or less, since 1817 when the coins were designed and first introduced. There was a brief period in the 1820s and 1830s that this design was not used, but throughout most of Queen Victorias reign and throughout the whole of the 20th century, this historic image appeared each year on the reverse.
