Coin Highlights:
The term ‘Jolly Roger’ originally referred to any sort of flag raised by pirates and privateers, and designs certainly varied. The name ‘Jolly Roger’ has since come to signify one particular type of pirate flag: a black background with a human skull set above two crossed bones. The origin of the name is not known for certain, but it may derive from the word ‘Roger’ which in that period signified the Devil, a figure often referred to as ‘Old Roger’. A group of pirates hanged in Newport, Rhode Island in 1723 had called their flag showing a skeleton holding an hourglass and a bleeding heart as ‘Old Roger’.
Obverse
The obverse field of the 2022 Niue Calico Jack Jolly Roger Silver Coin features the iconic effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. She is featured in a polished manner from a side profile relief, along with her crown and executive gaze. This image is commonly referred to as the Fourth Portrait and was designed by Ian-Rank-Broadley.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 2022 Calico Jack Jolly Roger 1 oz Silver Coin features the notorious Jolly Roger flag. It is engraved on a silver backdrop with a skull in the center and two crossing swords featured underneath it. The inscriptions here include Calico Jack, Jolly Roger along with the weight and purity of the coin.
