Reverse
Darth Maul comprises the coin’s reverse side, colorized and sculpted in the Japanese-inspired Chibi or “big head” style of caricature that emphasizes his malevolent gaze and visually-riveting facial tattoos.
History
Darth Maul made his first appearance inStar WarsEpisode I:The Phantom Menace,the first of the “prequel films” that George Lucas embarked upon after the completion of the originalStar Warsfilm trilogy. Even though fan opinions of the film were mixed, the character who was most consistently a fan favorite was Maul, a menacing Sith Lord who bristled with feral energy and terrifying martial skill. Brought to life by stunt man, actor, and martial artist Ray Park, Maul squared off with the Jedi Knights in lightsaber duels that elevated the form, establishing new benchmarks for action choreography in the franchise. So irresistible was this character to subsequent writing teams and fans that he returned from his apparent death at the end of that movie to make further television appearances, and his pivotal role made him a natural subject for a New Zealand MintStarWars-themed silver collectible.
