If you’re looking for a bit of color to add to your display case or you collect Chinese Zodiac or animal coins, the Singapore Mint has created a must-have item. The 2022 Proof Macau Lunar Tiger 1 oz Silver Coin is available in a limited mintage, so enthusiasts may want to buy this gorgeous and popular coin when they see it.
Highlights
Obverse
Inscriptions on the obverse include MACAU, CHINA, 20 PATACAS and 2022. The inscriptions appear in both English words and Chinese characters, and they’re arranged to resemble the shape of the Macau Peninsula. To the left of the inscriptions is a stunning tiger image. The tiger itself appears in mosaic tile. The tile, which is mostly orange, features some other colors for visual appeal and is a design inspired by the Portuguese heritage of the Macau area. Behind the colorful tiger, linework creates the effect of a jungle or forest.
Reverse
The reverse inscriptions read ST. LAWRENCE’S CHURCH, IGREJA DE S. LOURENCO, and 1 OZ 999 AG. The church is also named in Chinese characters along with the other languages. In the center of the inscriptions is an image of St. Lawrence’s Church, a neo-classical piece of architecture and a building that still functions as a church in Macau today.
Packaging
The coin ships in a protective plastic capsule and comes with a presentation box. These items help ensure you get a stunning, well-preserved coin and that you can keep it in great condition as you store or show it.
History
The tiger is a main staple of the Chinese Zodiac, and 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. The tiger stands for strength and bravery and is believed to ward off evil spirits. St. Lawrence’s Church is an equally powerful image. The church was built in the 1500s and is also known as Feng Shun Tang, which means Church of Smooth-sailing Winds. That’s because St. Lawrence is believed to be a saint of navigation in Portuguese Catholicism.
