History
Tribes have lived in Yosemite Valley for over 3000 years, and archeologists believe humans traversed the region as far back as 10,000 years ago. Tensions began to rise during the California Gold Rush, when the region saw an influx of new settlers. This ultimately led to the Mariposa War, which is considered part of the California genocide that resulted in the deaths of thousands of indigenous people. With the Native America the Beautiful Series, the Native American Mint hopes to shed light on the history of the people who lived and prospered for centuries in these regions.
