Pelicans are related to a species of birds that have already featured in the Rwandan Wildlife Series. Though pelicans were initially believed to be related to species such as frigatebirds, cormorants, and tropicbirds, most now believe them to be closely related to the shoebill, a family of birds that featured recently in the collection.

On the obverse of 2022 Proof Pelican 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of the coat of arms of Rwanda. The national seal of the Republic of Rwanda features a basket at the center set above a cogwheel. The sun rises above the basket as branches of sorghum and coffee immediately flank it on either side. This is set within the center field of the coin, with the image of two pelicans near a marshy body of water in the lower-left field. History

The Rwandan Wildlife African Ounce Series is one of several collections for Rwanda that includes African Ounce in the title. Introduced in 2008, this one is the longest-running series. In 2017, Rwanda gained two additional collections within the African Ounce concept. These included the Rwandan African Ounce Lunar Series and the Rwandan African Ounce Nautical Series.
