History
When William Wyon and William Dyce were creating the Gothic Crown coin for Queen Victoria, they were in the heart of an artistic period known as the Neo-gothic era. This Gothic revival period saw many artists, especially architects, creating designs that mimicked the ornate
style of the Medieval period. Dyce used this sensibility as inspiration for the famous cruciform design on the coins reverse. As such, the Gothic Crown coin is not simply an artifact of coin history, but an emblem of an entire artistic style that dominated Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
