Edmund Spenser is the author behind the epic poem The Faerie Queene. He completed his work in 1589 and presented the first copy to Queen Elizabeth I that same year. In fact, presenting her a copy of the work in her court earned him a pension for life from the Queen as a reward. It was the equivalent of 50 Pounds per year. The poems were first published with books one through three in 1590, and then republished in 1596 with the addition of books four through six.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of the 2022 Proof St. Helena Una and the Lion 1/2 Gram Gold Coins. This effigy of the Queen was created in 2015 by Jody Clark for the Royal Mint and features Her Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read ELIZABETH II, D.G. REGINA, F.D., ST. HELENA, and 2 POUNDS.

Reverse

Una and the Lion are depicted in the reverse design of 2022 Proof Una and the Lion 1/2 Gram Gold Coins. This design shows Una seated on the left looking to her right where the noble lion is seated by her side. The two are shown gazing at one another in this portrait. The inscriptions include UNA AND THE LION and 2022.

History

The first appearance of an Una and the Lion design on coinage came in 1839. William Wyon created a depiction of Queen Victoria as Una for a 5 pound gold coin that was issued to mark the first anniversary of her official coronation.
