History

Black rhinos are one of just two species of rhino in Africa. They also have four subspecies: the Southern Central black rhino, Eastern black rhino, Southwestern black rhino, and Western black rhino. The latter was declared extinct in 2011. Overall, the species is endangered, with only about 5,600 remaining in Africa. However, those numbers are nearly double what they were in 1995, when the entire species was on the brink of extinction. Thanks to the efforts of conservationists, their future, while uncertain, contains a glimmer of hope.
