When the African Wildlife Series Elephant Coins were introduced in 1999, the series was available as the Zambia Elephant collection. The coins were available in 1 oz silver, with 1 oz gold also available. Over time, the Bavarian State Mint expanded to offer a 1 Kilo silver coin. In 2004, the series became the Somalia Elephant collection and would expand further in the decade-plus to come.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2022 Somalia Elephant 1 oz Silver Coins, you will find the national coat of arms for Somalia. The design element shows a crowned shield with a single star at its center and a background field of horizontal lines. There is a single leopard on either side of the shield, with ferns and spears crossing beneath that are draped in a ribbon. Reverse

The reverse side of 2022 Somalia Elephant Silver Coins features a depiction of a small elephant herd. In this design, a mother elephant walks along the savanna in left-profile relief with its young calf at its side. There is a small flock of birds overhead with trees on the horizon. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read AFRICAN WILDLIFE, ELEPHANT, and 1 OZ AG 999.9.

History

The Somalia Elephant Series is a product of the Bavarian State Mint. One of several mints in Germany, the mint is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and has issued the coins in this series in 1999 when it debuted as the Zambia Elephant.
