History

Alexandre Gustave Eiffel had made a famous name for himself long before he built what would arguably become Paris’ most famous landmark and tourist attraction. A prolific civil engineer, he brought his sensibility and his brilliance to projects ranging from bridges to viaducts, cathedrals to theaters, and clock towers to synagogues. He even furnished the metal frame for the Statue of Liberty in 1886, just three years before his most iconic project would be completed. The Eiffel Tower wasn’t a hit with everyone when it began construction — drawing a famously irate petition of protest from the French arts establishment denouncing the “barbaric bulk” of this “ghastly dream” — but it endured to become an indelible symbol of France and remains Paris’ tallest building since it was completed in 1889.
