Obverse
The obverse of the 2023 British Britannia Gold Coin features a depiction of King Charles III. His Majesty is shown here in left-profile relief in the first-ever effigy of the new monarch. It was created by Martin Jennings in late 2022 and replaces the effigy of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on the obverse of British coinage. Inscriptions read CHARLES III, 25 POUNDS, and D.G. REX. F.D.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2023 Britannia 1/4 oz Gold Coins, you will find Britannia. This bust of the allegorical female is shown in front-facing relief as she looks to the right. Her right hand clutches a trident while her left rests on a Union Jack shield. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include BRITANNIA, 2023, 1/4 OZ, and 999.9 FINE GOLD.
History
The release of 2023 Britannias includes both Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III effigies. While the two are not in production at the same time at the Royal Mint, the products will circulate in the precious metals industry at the same time, a first for this series.
