The obverse design of the 2023 Proof Coronation of King Charles III Piedfort Sovereigns showcases a captivating left-profile relief of King Charles III, adorned with a crown. Created by Martin Jennings, this design graces the Great Britain Sovereign series for the second time, marking a historic moment in numismatic artistry. The inscriptions here read CHARLES III and DEI GRA REX FID DEF.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2023 Proof Great Britain Coronation of King Charles III Piedfort Sovereign features the iconic depiction of St. George slaying a dragon, skillfully crafted by Benedetto Pistrucci. This design, first introduced in 1817 during the reign of King George III, holds a significant place in British coinage history and adds a touch of grandeur to each Sovereign. Inscriptions on this side include 2023.
History
These Piedfort Sovereigns are truly remarkable, with their distinct double-thick blanks that contain double the precious metal content while maintaining the same diameter as a standard Sovereign. Their exceptional craftsmanship and limited mintage make them highly sought-after additions to any collection.
