The release of the modern Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars in 2021 marked a significant milestone, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar and the introduction of the first Peace Dollar. The original Morgan Dollars were issued by the US Mint from 1878 to 1904, and the design continued to be used in 1921 while a new design was being developed for the series.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 2023 Morgan Dollar features a captivating portrayal of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, this image presents Liberty in left-profile relief, donning a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and laurel wreath. Inscriptions here read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 2023.
Reverse
On the reverse side of each 2023 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin, you will discover the iconic heraldic eagle. This lifelike representation of the national seal depicts a powerful bald eagle facing forward, its wings outstretched, while grasping the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
The original Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars were composed of 90% silver. Each coin contained .7734 Troy oz of 90% silver, with the remaining 10% composed of copper. The modern versions, however, are specifically designed for precious metals collectors and contain .859 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
