In 1921, the United States Mint resumed the production of silver dollars after a hiatus of 17 years. The previous silver dollar, part of the Morgan Dollar Series, was minted in 1904. As the mint reintroduced the minting of silver dollars in 1921, the iconic imagery of the Morgan Dollar was revived and struck throughout much of that year.

In response to public demand for a novel silver dollar design that would symbolize the hard-won peace after World War I, Anthony de Francisci’s visions of Liberty and the bald eagle were selected for the new Peace Silver Dollar.
