These 2023 St. Helena Una and the Lion Gold Coins are considered proof-strikes. During production, specially polished dies were struck against the planchets multiple times. The resulting effect gives the field a mirrored quality and the design a frosty appearance. When your coin is delivered, you will find it in a display case. A Certificate of Authenticity is also included.
Obverse
King Charles III is depicted on the obverse of these Una and the Lion 1 oz Gold Coins. Glyn Davies is credited with this design, which shows the King facing left in a neo-classical rendition. Inscriptions read KING CHARLES III D G REX F D, ST. HELENA 5 POUNDS.
Reverse
Una and the lion appear on the reverse of 2023 Proof St. Helena Gold Coins. Una is shown on the left side, while the lion sits opposite her. Youll also find decorative vines, a shining sun, and inscriptions reading UNA AND THE LION, 2023.
History
When Edmund Spenser published the initial volume of The Faerie Queene in 1590, many took it to be an allegory for the life of Queen Elizabeth I. Central to Book I of the poem is Una, a princess who enlists the Redcrosse Knight to rescue her parents from a terrifying dragon. While on her quest to find the knight, Una encounters a lion who swoons at her beauty and elegance. After kissing her feet and licking her hands, the lion then joins Una as her protector and companion.
