This design is inspired by the actual statue of Winged Liberty, located in the heart of Mexico City atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. This monument was erected in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain. The inscriptions on this side include 2 ONZAS, PLATA PURA, 2023 LEY .999, and the mint mark.

History

The Mexican Mint introduced the Proof Mexican Silver Libertads in 1983, initially producing only 1 oz silver coins. Annual production began in 1986. Over time, new weight options were added, starting in 1992 with four fractional-ounce coins, followed by 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996, and a 1 Kilo coin in 2008. In 2017, the Mexican Mint added the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz reverse-proof coins to the series.
