The Morgan Dollar made its grand entrance in 1878, serving as the last widely accepted silver dollar in the US. Minted every year until 1904, this remarkable coin took a pause and then returned in 1921 after a 17-year break.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 2023-S Proof Morgan Dollars features George T. Morgan’s timeless 1878 design. Liberty takes center stage in profile, wearing her distinctive headgear and intricate hair details. Inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 2023.
Reverse
Flipping the coin to the reverse, you’ll find George T. Morgan’s portrayal of the bald eagle. The eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This design symbolizes both conflict and peace. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.
History
In 1921, when the US Mint brought back the silver dollar, they used George T. Morgan’s original design. George T. Morgan was also the 7th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint during that time. He had to recreate the Morgan Silver Dollar dies from scratch because the original dies were lost.
