After 1935, these coins weren’t made for regular use anymore. But guess what? In 2021, the US Mint decided to bring back the design of the Peace Dollar, but this time as a .999 silver bullion coin series. Highlights:
The design of the Peace Silver Dollar presented challenges in terms of striking the coin properly. The high relief of the initial design made it difficult to fully strike the coins with consistent details, leading to issues such as weakly defined central details.
Obverse
The 2023-S Proof Peace Dollar features Lady Liberty on the front. She’s looking to the left and has a shining crown on her head, with her hair flowing gently. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRVST, and 2023.
Reverse
Flip the 2023-S Proof Peace Dollar Silver Coin to the back, and you’ll find an American bald eagle. This eagle isn’t carrying any arrows or a shield it’s just sitting calmly on a branch. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ONE DOLLAR, PEACE, and the S mint mark.
History
In the 1930s, many Peace Silver Dollars were melted down due to the requirements of the Pittman Act, which aimed to reduce the excessive silver stockpiles. This act resulted in a reduced number of Peace Dollars available to collectors today.
