Obverse
On the obverse of 2024 $2 Lunar New Year Dragon Legal Tender Notes there is a colorized dragon mask where you traditionally see the Thomas Jefferson portrait. To the right and left of this mask there are Chinese dragon puppets on poles guided by dancers. The obverse also includes festive text reading Year of the Dragon, 2024.
Reverse
The reverse of 2024 $2 Dancing Dragon Legal Tender Notes features a replica design of the 1818 oil painting titled Declaration of Independence. This American classic shows an expansive image of the Congress observing the Founding Fathers review the Declaration. The reverse also features denomination details along the border.
History
During the Han Dynasty, the dragon dance was performed to please the ancestral spirits and so that the crops would be blessed with rain. Historically, the Chinese dragon has been associated with water, with some even claiming it can conjure up clouds and rain in the same way that the Western dragon can breathe fire. Today, the dragon dance remains a crucial part of Chinese culture, especially during the spring festival, which spans 15 days following the Lunar New Year.
