The Texas Rangers, created in 1823, are an investigative law enforcement agency based in Texas’s capital city of Austin. Over the years, the Texas Rangers have investigated crimes ranging from murder to political corruption, acted in riot control and as detectives, protected the governor of Texas, tracked down fugitives, and functioned as a paramilitary force. The Rangers have taken part in many of the most important events of Texas history, such as stopping the assassination of presidents William Howard Taft and Porfirio Daz in El Paso, Texas. They’ve also had a hand in solving some of the best-known criminal cases in the history of the Old West, such as those of gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, bank robber Sam Bass, and outlaws Bonnie and Clyde.

The earliest Texas Ranger badges were made in 1889 from Mexican 5 Peso silver coins, likely crafted by local jewelers, metalsmiths, and gunsmiths. They were used to identify the Texas Rangers in the line of duty from other Texas law enforcement agencies, including hired guns. The Intaglio Mint Gargoyle Texas Ranger rounds pay tribute to the Wagon Wheel Badge worn by the Texas Rangers until 1935.

Each round is intricately sculpted in high-relief from 5 oz .999 pure silver with a unique antique finish and reeded edge. The stenciled lines and dark matte background of the antique finish lends an Old West quality to the image, allowing every intricate detail to emerge. Add one of these exquisite and historic rounds to your collection today!

Obverse

The obverse features the Texas Ranger badge symbolizing the “Lone Star” of Texas. The points of the star are supported by an engraved wheel, which gives it its nickname, the “Wagon-Wheel Badge”. The Wagon-Wheel Badge was the only badge issued until the Rangers were issued an official badge in 1935. CO. A (which stands for “Company A”) and TEXAS RANGERS are also inscribed, flanked on either side by a laurel of oak leaves. The metal and purity is inscribed between the “spokes” of the star.

Reverse

The reverse is akin to the reverse of a Mexican 5 Peso piece. It features the Ring of the Serpents of the Aztec “Piedra del Sol”, surrounded by the words ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, (United Mexican States), and an outer ring of dentils.
