In what remains the biggest rescue attempt in history, the US Military sent soldiers headlong into the meat of Japanese forces at Cabanatuan in the Philippines to rescue 500 US prisoners of war. Some 133 Americans from the 6^th Ranger Battalion joined roughly 250 Filipino guerilla fighters to take on the 220 Japanese guards at the camp, moving 30 miles behind Japanese lines to reach the camp and risking a broader conflict with the roughly 9,000 Japanese soldiers stationed nearby. After a 30-minute nighttime attack, the Rangers rescued the 500-plus POWs and escorted them back to the safety of American lines.
