Prior to 1965, the vast majority of US coin denominations were issued with gold and silver content for use in circulation. The Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar, and Dollar all featured actual silver content, while the $2.50, $5, $10, $20, and $1 gold coins were issued with actual gold content. Gold coining ended in 1933 and the use of silver content in the other denominations ended with a final release in 1964. Today, remaining specimens from this era are popular collector coins. Right now, you can buy 90% Silver GEM Proof Washington Quarters online at Provident Metals.

With your purchase of the 90% Silver GEM Proof Washington Quarter in this Provident Metals listing, you will receive your Quarter in plastic bags. These coins are GEM Proof specimens. This is a generic term used to refer to coins that have a mirrored surface with high-quality visuals, but also minor flaws that include a few hairlines that are noticeable.

Obverse

President George Washington features on the obverse side of 90% Silver Washington Quarters. This design was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for the Bicentennial celebration of Washingtons birth. This effigy replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter design and comes with inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and a date mark.

Reverse

An American bald eagle is depicted in the reverse design of 90% Silver GEM Proof Washington Quarters. Also created by Flanagan in 1932, this visual shows a bald eagle perched on a sheaf of arrows with its wings spread wide. The eagle looks to its right, the coins left, and there is a wreath of olive branches beneath. The inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and QUARTER DOLLAR.

History

The Washington Quarter was issued from 1932 to 1964 with 90% silver content. These coins feature a balance of 10% copper. Starting in 1965, the US Mint issued the dime, quarter, and half dollar with a new cupronickel alloy as the price of silver rose well beyond the assigned face values of the coins.
