Obverse
The obverse design of the coin features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II imagined in 1998 by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majestys portrait is set lower in the design field in order to fit the pass-through circle with the filigree heart, upon which you can see the backside of the red jewel set within a flower.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2017 Niue Love Heart 1 oz Silver Coin features the intricate design of a filigree heart inside of a cut-out circle on the upper part of the display field. The background design features two butterflies moving amidst a field of lovely flowers. A bright red jewel is placed in the right-half of the filigree heart.
The coin includes filigree, which is a type of ornamental work that includes the use of fine wire formed into a delicate tracery, or shape. On these coins, each side of the coin has a heart shape that is visible in a pass-through section on the top of the coin. This means allows you to view the heart shape on both sides.
