Obverse
Walking Liberty is found on the obverse side of 2021 (S) American Eagle Silver Coins. Designed in 1916, this image of Liberty is a left-profile portrait that shows her walking toward the sun as it crests over a mountaintop on the horizon. Liberty is draped in the American flag and carries branches of oak and laurel in her left hand. The inscriptions on this side of the coin read Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is present on the reverse of 2021 (S) American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. This is the final time this design element will feature on the American Eagle Silver Coins. It was modernized in 1986 by John Mercanti and features the bald eagle supporting the US national shield. The eagle clutches the olive branch of peace and the arrows of war in its talons. Above its head is a cluster of 13 stars in a tight triangle. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include United States of America and 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar.
History
By mid-2021, the United States Mint will unveil 2021-dated American Eagles with the new reverse design. Emily Damstra has created a depiction of the bald eagle in flight with a large oak branch in its talons. Coins issued from late-2020 until mid-2021 will showcase the original design elements, while all coins issued from mid-2021 onward will feature the new reverse.
