Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 1986 Isle of Man Angel Gold Coins. This design is similar to the Raphael Maklouf bust from the Royal Mint that was designed in 1985. It depicts a younger Queen Elizabeth II with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. On this face of the coins, you will find inscriptions of ISLE OF MAN, ELIZABETH II, and 1986.
Reverse
The Archangel Michael graces the reverse field of 1986 Isle of Man Angel 1 oz Gold Coins. This was the original design from the series and captures Michael in a three-quarter relief from the left side. He wields a spear in one hand and a shield featuring the Christian cross in the other. He uses the shield to block the dragons flames as he drives the spear through its neck. Inscriptions on this field of the coin read FINE GOLD 1 OUNCE and ANGEL. The 1 is situated in the middle of the FINE GOLD and OUNCE inscriptions, just above the word ANGEL so that it denotes both the weight of gold in the coin and the face value.
History
The Isle of Man Angel Series is based on two different coins of the 15th and 14th centuries. It is most directly linked with the English gold angel coin introduced in 1465 by King Edward IV. However, that English coin was patterned after a French coin of similar design that had been in production since 1340.
