Obverse

The obverse of the American Eagle Coin shows the Walking Liberty design that originally featured on 1916 Half Dollar, marching forward with the American flag held aloft. Profile portraits of Kennedy and Roosevelt dominate the obverse sides of each of the Presidential coins, while the obverse of each America the Beautiful Quarter bears a modified effigy of George Washington as typically seen on circulation quarters.

Reverse

The Great Seal of the United States appears on the reverse of the American Eagle Coin and of each Presidential coin. The reverse of each America the Beautiful Quarter shows a portrait of a different national park, historic site, or natural preserve: the subjects in 2012 came from Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, New Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

History

The United States Mint has long offered proof sets as a cost-effective way for collectors to acquire examples of American coinage in proof condition. Bullion formed only a part of the standard proof sets until 2012, when the Mint began to issue Limited Edition sets that contained only the silver items of a standard set. This was the first such set, and like other subsequent Limited Edition sets it features proof-quality bullion coins with frosted designs and mirror-like fields.
