While history is not cut and dried and it’s hard to tell, sometimes, where a dog breed originated, the international Cynological Federation was certain about one thing after perusing historical records in 1994: the Dalmatian dog is native, or autochthonous, to Croatia. Obverse

The noted sculptor Nikola Vurag provided the Dalmatian dog profile portrait that dominates the obverse. It represents both the breed’s signature look and Croatian geography, its spots echoing the shape of the Republic’s offshore islands. The backdrop consists of stylized sea waves and a part of Croatia’s mainland, with the inscriptions “50 Kuna” (in Cyrillic) and the official national name “Republica Hravatska.”

Reverse

A sleek couple of Dalmatian dogs dominate the reverse, posed one before the other in reclining and standing postures. They’re accompanied by the inscriptions “2021,” “Dalmatinski Pas,” and “Canis Dalmaticus,” the name that was attached to them in their first written records in the 14th century.

History

The Dalmatian dog has long been a famous companion animal and a working and hunting breed, also famous as “pointers” for their alert nature and adeptness at singling out prey or malefactors. They have been popular on multiple continents as guard dogs and companion animals, and remain one of the most popular and growing breeds in the world today.
