Obverse

The obverse of Burnished American Eagle Silver Coins features the iconic Walking Liberty design. Based on the 1890s French gold coins design known as the Sower, Adolph A. Weinmans image shows Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date mark.

Reverse

On the reverse of the Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin is a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Designed by John Mercanti, it shows the bald eagle in front-facing relief as it supports the US national shield. The design includes the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR, and the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

History

Burnished American Eagles were paused in 2009 and 2010. The intense demand for BU American Eagles during the Great Recession led to a shortage of acceptable blanks, resulting in the mint pausing the Proof and Burnished coins in 2009, and the Burnished coins one more time in 2010.
