Obverse

On the obverse side of all Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is always shown in right-profile relief in portraits on British and Commonwealth denominations. British monarchs are traditionally depicted in the opposite relief of their predecessor, with Queen Elizabeth IIs father, King George VI, depicted in left-profile relief.

Reverse

The reverse face of Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Silver Coins comes with an image of the sugar maple leaf. The national emblem, the sugar maple leaf features prominently on the national flag and is used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins across the gold, silver, platinum, and palladium coins.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Silver Coins feature three different possible effigies of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The first two issues in 1988 and 1989 had the final releases of the second-generation bust created by Arnold Machin. This showed the Queen at 39 years old wearing a crown wreath. The third-generation design from Dora de Pedery-Hunt, the first from a Canadian artist, was used from 1990 to 2003 and showed the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem. The modern design from Susanna Blunt has been in use since 2004 and depicts the Queen with no crown.
