Canadian Wildlife Coins at Provident Metals

Among one of the more popular non-Maple Leaf products from the Royal Canadian Mint, is the Canadian Wildlife series. This iconic series features unique imagery of Canadian Wildlife on 1 oz silver coins made from .9999 pure silver. Each obverse design also features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, and every coin has a mintage of just 1,000,000. Learn all about this well-known series right here, at Provident Metals.

2011 Timber Wolf

The first issue in this popular series came in 2011 with the release of the Timber Wolf. This coin was designed by William Woodruff, a Senior Engraver at the Royal Canadian Mint.

This design features the Timber Wolf front and center standing on a ledge amidst a wilderness and full moon background. The Timber Wolf is among the largest species of wolf and is known for being an incredible hunter.

2011 Grizzly

Also designed by William Woodruff, the second release in this series features the Grizzly Bear. While this terrifying animal can be found in parts of the United States, they’re mostly found in Canada.

The design showcases the bear standing in right-profile relief, giving a mighty roar. The peaks of the Rocky Mountains can be seen in the background.

2012 Cougar

The first release in 2012 featured a stunning image of the cougar. This powerful design was also created by William Woodruff and is the third coin in the overall series.

This image shows the cougar in front-facing relief showcasing its ferocious fangs at the viewer. The cougar is seen with its front paws on a log, about to leap over it. The cougar is known as one of the stealthiest predators in all of North America but is known to live throughout Canada.

2012 Moose

For the fourth release, the largest species of deer, the moose, is featured on the reverse. This coin is the final in the overall series to be designed by William Woodruff.

The moose is shown in left-profile relief standing in a field of grass. Along with being the largest species of deer, the moose is one of the largest mammals in North America.

2013 Pronghorn Antelope

The Pronghorn Antelope is the only member of its species that is found in North America. The release of this coin marked the 5th in the overall series and is the first to be designed by Emily Damstra. Emily Damstra would go on to create the new reverse design in the popular American Eagle Silver series.

The antelope is seen walking through a field of grass, in right-profile relief. Notably, the Pronghorn Antelope is not actually an antelope and is more commonly associated with a giraffe and okapi.

2013 Wood Bison

The final issue in this coin program showcases the Wood Bison. Weighing over 2,000 pounds, they are the largest terrestrial animal in North America. This coin was also designed by Emily Damstra.

The Wood Bison is shown in left-profile relief as it runs through a shallow body of water.

Wild Canada Series

The Royal Canadian Mint brought back these 6 designs for a new series called the Wild Canada series. This collection was a line of Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins with privy marks for each of these 6 animals.
