Obverse
The obverse face of the Colombian 5 Peso Gold Coins includes one of two possible designs. from 1918 to 1928, the coins were issued with a stylized bust of General Simon Bolivar, the man who lead a war of independence that freed much of northern South America and southern Central America from Spanish control. The 1918 issue marked the 100th anniversary of his triumph. Other date marks feature the image of a man chiseling stone. Republica Colombia is inscribed on this face regardless of design element.
Reverse
On the reverse of all Colombian 5 Peso Gold Coins is an image of the national coat of arms for Colombia. The design features the national shield with an eagle perched at the top and has inscriptions of the weight, purity, and denomination. These inscriptions read Cinco Pesos, G 7.988, LEY, and 0.916 2/3.
History
These 5 Peso coins were introduced by Colombia in 1880 with the adoption of the gold standard. The coins were styled in gold content and weight after the British Gold Sovereign and became known as the Colombian Sovereign. In the latter years of issue, the coin was pegged to the gold-backed American dollar after the British Empire abandoned the gold standard.
