The sea turtle known as the hawksbill is a critically endangered species that represents the only extant species in its genus. Distributed worldwide through warm ocean waters, the hawksbill has Atlantic and Indo-Pacific subspecies. In the South Pacific, the hawksbill has long been relevant to indigenous cultures and is known to travel between the northern coast of New Zealands north island and the islands of Niue and Fiji.

Obverse

The obverse side of these New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle 1 oz Gold Coins is available with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. To date, the Niue Hawksbill Turtle Gold Coins have only been produced with the fifth-generation Commonwealth design of Her Majesty from Ian Rank-Broadley. Originally created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England, the design began to appear on Australian and Commonwealth coins in the South Pacific in 1999.

Reverse

On the reverse face of New Zealand Niue Hawksbill Turtle Gold Coins is the hawksbill turtle swimming through the warm waters of the South Pacific Ocean. The turtles ornate, overlapping shell tiles are easily visible and there is a mirrored sliver of space on the design field with the inscription of Turtle.

History

Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins debuted from the New Zealand Mint in 2010 as the Fiji Taku. The coin was issued as the Taku from 2010 to 2013 and then shifted to Niue in 2014. The coins maintained the same reverse design across the change from Fiji to Niue.
