The final design of the $1 US Gold coin from the 19th century was the Indian Gold Series known as the Type 3. Redesigned by James B. Longacre in 1856, this design featured on the obverse of the coin for the longest period of time as it was on the coin for more than 30 of the 40 years the coin was in production. Today, you have the chance to get Very Fine Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3 online at Provident Metals.

The $1 Gold Coin from the United States Mint went through three obverse designs and two reverse designs during its 40 years in production. All three obverse designs were created by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The first reverse design came from Peter Filatreu Cross, while the second came from Longacre.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins Type 3. This bust of Liberty was created in 1856 by James B. Longacre as the third and final design of the $1 Gold Coin. The design depicts Liberty with a feathered headdress on her head and United States of America around her portrait.

Reverse

The coin denomination and a large wreath are found on the reverse of Pre-33 $1 Indian Gold Coins. The original design had United States of America and a smaller wreath on the reverse. Longacres redesign of the reverse removed the engraving of the nation of issue and enlarged the size of the wreath around inscriptions of 1 Dollar and a date mark.

History

The Type 2 and Type 3 designs in the $1 Gold Coin are very similar. The Type 2 design was only available from 1854 to 1856 and featured a smaller Liberty head with the feathered headdress. Longacre increased the size of Libertys head in the portrait for the Type 3 and it remained the same through 1889 when the series ended.
