From 1849 to 1889, the United States Mint issued $1 (USD) gold coins into circulation. Spurred on by the influx of gold into the US Treasury, the gold dollar debuted in 1849 and throughout its brief run, the design went through three iterations on the obverse. The last of those is known as the Type 3. Today, you have the opportunity to get Pre-33 $1 Indian Princess Gold Coins from the Type 3 release online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with a plastic flip!
  • Design used from 1856 to 1889!
  • Contains .04837 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • The face value of $1 (USD) is backed by the United States.
  • On the obverse is Liberty in the Indian Princess design.
  • The reverse includes the denomination with a wreath.
  • Design by James B. Longacre.

The introduction of a gold dollar immediately gained traction in the American economy when it was released in 1849. At this point in time, a lot of the nations silver coins were being hoarded by Americans or exported overseas in international commerce. The coin remained popular up to and during the Civil War, but was limited during the war in some parts of the country as its value skyrocketed beyond the $1 (USD) face value. After the Civil War and until its cessation in 1889, the gold dollar was never again as popular as it was originally.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Indian Princess Gold Coin is the image of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. This design uses an indigenous headdress on Libertys head with long flowing hair down the back of her neck and United States of America inscribed around it.

Reverse

The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Indian Princess Gold Coins bears only the denomination of the coin, the date mark, and a wreath around the two inscriptions. You will find 1 Dollar and the date mark in the center of the wreath, which is robust and connected by a ribbon at the bottom.

History

The first design of the US gold dollar coin featured a left-profile bust of Liberty created by Longacre that was similar to the Christian Gobrecht designs in use on the Gold Eagle denominations. Liberty had a coronet crown with her hair up in a slight bun. There was a field of 13 stars around her in this design.

In the Type 2 release, Longacre swapped out the coronet for the indigenous headdress and replaced the stars with United States of America. The Type 3 design used a slightly more upright headdress and had a larger bust of Libertys head than the Type 2, with the latter only in use for two years.
