From 1849 to 1889, the United States Mint issued the US dollar coin in two metallic options. The US silver dollar was already available in 1849, at which point the US Mint introduced a US gold dollar coin as well. The gold dollar went through several design iterations during its 40 years in production. Today, you have the opportunity to get Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The designs used on the US one dollar gold coin for most of its history were created by James B. Longacre, the 4th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Longacre was the Chief Engraver from 1844 until his death and he created all three Liberty busts to feature on the obverse of this gold denomination, as well as the second and longest-running reverse design of the coin.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type 1 is a depiction of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Her portrait is shown with the coronet crown on her head that is inscribed with Liberty, and her hair is shown up in a loose bun at the back of her head with a few straggling strands down her back. The Liberty bust is surrounded by a circle of 13 stars.
Reverse
The reverse face of Pre-33 $1 Liberty Gold Coins Type I include the denomination and date mark as major inscriptions. These inscriptions of 1 Dollar and a date mark are at the center of the design field with a thin, small wreath around the markings. The words United States of America are inscribed along the top rocker. This design was used only until 1854 and was created by Peter Filatreu Cross.
History
The Liberty Gold Coin in the US one dollar series was issued in the Type 1 design from 1849 to 1854. In 1854, Longacre redesigned the obverse with a new portrait of Liberty with a smaller head and a feathered headdress on instead of the coronet crown. This was later redesigned by Longacre in 1856 to increase the size of the portrait and straighten the feathered headdress. Longacre also redesigned the reverse in 1854, enlarging the wreath around the denomination and date while removing United States of America from the design field.
