The smallest denomination from the US Eagle denomination was the Quarter Eagle. Issued with a $2.50 face value, the coin shared the same designs through its early history as the Half Eagle, Eagle, and the later Double Eagle, with the most popular being the Liberty Coronet design used on this denomination from 1840 to 1907. Provident Metals currently has Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins available to you for purchase online in Very Fine condition.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin features Christian Gobrechts left-profile bust of Liberty. Known as the Coronet Head, this design shows Liberty with most of her hair up in a bun and some curls running down her neck as she wears a coronet crown. On that crown, you will find the word Liberty inscribed. A ring of 13 stars encircles Liberty on this face of the coins with a date mark included below the bust.

Reverse

The reverse face of Pre-33 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coins includes a design of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The heraldic eagle shown here was created by Gobrecht and features the eagle with the US national shield on its chest and its talons clutching arrows and an olive branch. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include United States of America and 2 1/2 D.

History

The Liberty Head, or Coronet Head, was available on all denominations of the US Eagle coinage from 1837 to 1907. It is considered the most popular design from the series with the exception of Augustus Saint-Gaudens final design for the Double Eagle Gold coin in the 20th century. It was on the coins in this denomination series for the longest period of time of any imagery.
