  • An indigenous leader is featured on the obverse.
  • American bald eagle on the reverse.
  • Please note you may receive matching grading house labels if you purchase more than one coin.

The Indian Eage design was the last on the Gold Half Eagle and was created in 1908 by Bela Lyon Pratt. The Eagle denomination of gold coins consisted of the Quarter Eagle ($2.50), Half Eagle ($5), and Eagle ($10) from 1795 through 1933. The Double Eagle ($20) was introduced in 1849. Its use on the three smaller Eagle denominations for nearly 70 years was not surpassed in duration by another US coin until 1979 when Abraham Lincolns bust on the US penny reached its 70th year and counting.

Obverse

An indigenous figure is depicted in left-profile relief on the obverse of the Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin. This figure wears a full headdress and boasts a stoic look on its face. Inscriptions include Liberty above, the date mark below, and 13 stars in all with seven stars behind the figures head and six in front of its face.

Reverse

For the reverse field, the Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins showcase the image of an American bald eagle on a sheaf of arrows. The arrows are clustered together in the sheaf with an olive branch wrapped around it. The bird is at rest with its wings at its side. United States of America, In God We Trust, E Pluribus Unum, and Five Dollars are all inscribed on this face of the coin.

History

The Indian Gold Half Eagle design was unique among the denominations in this gold coin series. The designs on both sides of the coin were struck incuse into the surface of the coins. This means the entire coin has a flat surface with the designs below it, rather than boasting designs engraved onto the surface. The coins were struck regularly from 1908 to 1916, halted during World War I, and coined again in 1929.

Ordering

These Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coins are available in a protective plastic slab. Each one is in Mint State 64 condition, indicating the presence of average luster with light, scattered contact marks and a few scattered hairlines.
