American Buffalo Gold Coins from the United States Mint replicate the images from the Buffalo Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel was designed by James Earle Fraser in 1913 for the US Mint and featured on the five-cent piece from 1913 until 1938. The design was the first major American denomination to feature the image of an indigenous tribal figure.

Obverse

For the obverse, Proof American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins feature the design of a Native American tribal figure in right-profile relief. The included inscriptions are basic and feature Liberty and the date mark as the primary options. These Proof American Buffalo Coins also have the W mint mark of the West Point Mint.

Reverse

The reverse side of Proof American Buffalo 1 oz Gold Coins includes a depiction of Black Diamond. This American bison, also known as a buffalo, is the largest land mammal in North America. The inspiration for this particular creature came from a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 20th century.

History

The United States Mint issued gold coins from the moment it began coining operations in 1792. However, the early gold coins from the mint hit a maximum purity of 22-karat gold, or .9167 gold content. By 1837, the US Mint had leveled out gold purity at .900 and this continued until 1933 when gold coin production was suspended. The return of gold coins with the American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin in 1986 included 22-karat gold, with the American Buffalo Gold Coin being the first to feature .9999 24-karat gold.
