Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins have long featured new designs on the reverse side of the coins every year. The notable exceptions to this are the 1997 debut coin and the 2017 20^th anniversary coin. Both of these have the exact same obverse and reverse designs matching the bullion coins use of the Statue of Liberty on the obverse and American bald eagle in flight over the nation. All other issue years have, at least, new reverse designs.

Obverse

The obverse of most Proof American Eagle 1 oz Platinum Coins features the image of the Statue of Liberty as created in 1997 by John Mercanti. This design featured on the obverse of Proof Platinum Eagles from 1997 to 2017. With the 2018 release of the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence design series, modern images of Liberty replaced Mercantis design on the obverse.

Reverse

For the reverse of Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins, the United States Mint has used new designs in every year except the two mentioned above. For example, coins dated 1998 to 2002 have the Vistas of Liberty designs with the American bald eagle depicted flying over a different region of the country.

Proof American Eagle Platinum Coins have been issued in the 1 oz weight in every year since 1997. The collection has a total of five different design series that have been used on the reverse, with random designs chosen for years for the 2003-2005 issues of the coin.
