Obverse

On the obverse side of all 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The portrait of Her Majesty has appeared on all Canadian coins since she rose to the throne in 1952. This particular design is the fourth-generation Canadian effigy and it was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt. This is the first monarch effigy since the reign of King George VI to depict the ruler without a crown.

Reverse

The reverse face of 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Silver Coins includes a design of the sugar maple leaf. The sugar maple is one of the most common species of maple trees in North America and its leaf has long been held up as a symbol of Canada. As early as the 17th century, villages, communities, and territories used the sugar maple leaf as an emblem. Today, it features on governmental seals and the national flag. The design used on the Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins comes from Walter Ott and was created in 1979.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf Silver Coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988, the same year the Canadian Maple Leaf Platinum Coin debuted and just nine years after the introduction of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin. All Canadian Maple Leaf coins are produced by the Royal Canadian Mint at its Ottawa Mint facility, the original location opened in 1908. The mint includes facilities at Ottawa and Winnipeg, with Ottawa coining all bullion and numismatic specimens while Winnipeg handles the production of circulating currency.
