Like many of the Royal Canadian Mint’s bullion products, the Gold Maple Leaf’s obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. There have been five different portraits of Her Majesty throughout her long reign, so the particular design you receive may vary based on the year of issue. As these coins are sourced from the secondary market, the dates of this product will be grab bag style and will likely show signs of wear including contact marks, reed marks, copper spots, and/or abrasions, etc.
The reverse features Canada’s iconic national symbol of the maple leaf. You’ll also find inscriptions of the coin’s purity and weight.
The first Gold Maple Leaf was issued in 1979, making it the world’s first pure 24k gold bullion coin. At that time, the only widely available gold coin was the 22k South African Krugerrand. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf continues to be among the world’s purest gold coins regularly issued by a sovereign mint. Gold Maples issued between 1979 and 1982 had a purity of .999.

I received a Gem BU 1983 1/10 oz Maple today. This coin is fresh, like it was just minted. This is my first one, but it won’t be my last if they keep looking like this one.

I received a 1982 CGM. While I find it interesting to own the first year of the 1/10 oz coin, the one I received is by no means “brilliant uncirculated.” It has a number of scratches on both sides, especially the obverse. They do not appear to be scratches from storage, but rather from handling. This coin looks like it bounced around someone’s junk drawer unprotected for many years.
Otherwise, the coin is nice. The image of the young queen is quite different that the newer coins. This is my first 24k coin, and I’m also amazed at how different the color is from the 22k varieties. It was well packaged and delivered quickly as well.

A tenth may look small but as a retired gold miner I can tell you 3.101 grams is a great weekend digging or dredging. The maple showed up still in it’s sealed mint plastic and is a addition to the collection. Best store, great customer service. My dad said “Thank you provident” and grind.
