Like most coins produced by the Perth Mint, the obverse of the Gold Nugget features a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The denomination is inscribed as well.
The Gold Nugget’s reverse design changes on an annual basis. The 2004 issue features two hopping red kangaroos, symbolizing the Australian outback. Inscriptions include the coin’s name, weight, purity, and year of issue.
Australian Gold Nuggets were first introduced in 1987 by Gold Corp, owned by the Western Australian government. The reverse originally featured a literal gold nugget. In 1989, the design was switched to feature the kangaroo, which is now widely associated with the country of Australia.
Each graded Gold Nugget comes sealed in a plastic holder, with a label detailing the grade given by NGC.
