South African Gold Krugerrands | African Gold Coins

Made from 22 karat gold bullion or South African Krugerrands are beautiful and extremely durable.

Provident Metals is excited to present several impressive coins from the Republic of South Africa. The nation’s mint was informally established 110 years ago by Boer statesman and president Paul Kruger, when he decided the republic should mint its own coins. Soon thereafter, Great Britain invaded the country and, unfortunately for Uncle Paul (as Kruger was affectionately nicknamed), British currency reigned supreme.
In 1919, the Pretoria Mint Act established a branch of Great Britain’s Royal Mint in South Africa. It officially opened in 1923 when Arthur of Connaught, a British prince and the Governor-General of the Union of South Africa, struck its first gold pound. It wasn’t until 1941 that the government of South Africa finally appropriated the mint and the South African Mint Company was officially established nearly 50 years later.
The South African Gold Krugerrand, a coin named for Kruger, is available through Provident Metals in 1, ½, ¼ and 1/10 ounce sizes. First manufactured in 1967 as a marketing strategy for South African gold, the Krugerrand was an instant hit and a virtual anomaly: a bullion coin intended for circulation. By 1980 the Krugerrand was responsible for 90% of the world’s gold bullion market, despite import bans from many foreign countries. (Worldwide, South Africa’s brutal Apartheid policies had become increasingly unpopular. Thankfully, they ended in 1994 with the democratic election of Nelson Mandela).

The obverse of the Krugerrand, designed by Otto Schultz, bears the bearded profile of its namesake and the republic’s four-term president, Kruger. The reverse, designed by Coert Steynberg, features the sprightly image of one of South Africa’s national symbols, the springbok, a design previously used on the republic’s five shilling.

Provident Metals also carries the alluring Two-Rand Gold Coin, introduced in 1989. The Rand replaced the pound as South Africa’s official form of currency in 1961 and serves as legal tender in the neighboring republics of Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland. The obverse of each Two-Rand Gold Coin features Jan van Riebeck, who in 1652 founded the first Dutch settlements of South Africa. Like the Krugerrand, the coin features the dainty springbok on its reverse.
