Johnson Matthey can be traced back to 1817 when Percival Johnson opened a gold assayer building in London. George Matthey joined the company in 1851 and the success of the company quickly took off. The name of the company was changed to Johnson & Matthey and within a year they were the official assayer to the Bank of England. In 2015, Johnson Matthey sold its gold and silver refiners to Asahi Refining. While Johnson Matthey hasn’t been around for nearly a decade their products are still popular via the secondary market. When looking at Johnson Matthey products here at Provident Metals, you’ll see that plenty are designated as secondary market items. A secondary market item is essentially one that is given to us from a party other than the original mint. Seeing as if Johnson Matthey was sold to Asahi in 2015, several Johnson Matthey products are designated as secondary market.
At Provident Metals, we offer Johnson Matthey silver rounds. These 1 oz silver rounds are made from .999 silver and include an array of unique designs. Some designs include themes based on the Amendments of the Constitution, such as the right to bear arms, right to trial by jury, and right to privacy among others.
While we offer silver rounds from Johnson Matthey, most of our Johnson Matthey products are bullion bars. These gold, silver, platinum, and palladium bars are available in sizes ranging from 1 oz to 1 kilogram. Both minted ingots and cast bars are readily available as well.
Minted ingots showcase the Johnson Matthey logo at the top of the bar followed by the metal content, purity, and a serial number on the obverse. The reverse features a repeating pattern of the Johnson Matthey logo.
Cast bars are another unique option, which is typically made in larger sizes. These bars will have an intentionally blank reverse and minimal design elements on the obverse. However, there’s a bit more variety in terms of cast bars from Johnson Matthey. Some bars feature a Canadian serial number, whereas others are loaf-style bars.
