Background on the Mexican Peso Gold Coin

Mexican Pesos are the official currency of Mexico and are both coinage and paper banknotes. These coins are produced by the Mexican Mint, the oldest mint in North America. Every peso, both historic and modern, are products of the Mexican Mint. Pesos are now officially known as “Nuevo pesos.”

The first gold coins to feature the word “peso” came during the Second Mexican Empire. From 1864 to 1867, the empire issued silver coins with the word “pesos” on the face value. A few years later the first gold coins reading “pesos” debuted.

In 1921, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mexican Independence from Spanish colonial rule, The Mexican Mint issued a 50 Peso Mexican Gold Coin commonly referred to as the Centenario. These coins featured a front-facing relief image of Winged Victory, a popular image that would be used on future Mexican Libertad Gold Coins.

Up until the introduction of the South African Krugerrand Gold Coin, which is considered the first modern bullion gold coin in the world, the Mexican Peso Gold Coin was the purest gold coin on the market.

Design

The most popular design is the 50 Peso Mexican Gold Coin. This design is a popular one among investors and collectors as it shows a front-facing image of Winged Victory holding a wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. The Mexican coat of arms is seen on the reverse field.

Other designs are dependent on a number of factors such as the denomination. For example, one popular design features the Mexican coat of arms on the obverse, while a left-profile portrait of Don Miguel Hidalgo is on the reverse.
